The Law of Reciprocity

The law of reciprocity means that when someone does something nice to you, you feel compelled to do something nice in return. For example, someone holds a door open for you, and you feel compelled to say thank you and smile. Yes, this is also good manners too, but for most of us feel that we want to say thank you as someone has done something nice. If someone gives us a gift out of the blue, we might feel compelled to think of something we can give them in return. Obviously there are takers in life who take everything [...]

What does it take to become a good therapist?

Well, it’s a question that hopefully anyone who embarks on any training will ask themselves and ask the training provider what they think what it takes to be a good therapist. For me, I think it takes empathy, which is completely different from sympathy. Sympathy you can get from friends and family who may give you a hug, make a cup of tea and tell you everything will be all right. Empathy from a therapist means you’ve actually understanding here a client is coming from, the belief systems and the values they have. So empathy is really important and of [...]

One to one training

I first began one to one training in November last year. In that time I have noticed so many positive things about being able to train one to one in the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma and NLP certification. The benefits are so numerous and these are the things my students and I have seen. You don’t have to compare yourself with anyone else. It's just you and the trainer. You get 100% attention and can ask any questions, even if at times they may seem silly, as you know you are not being judged in any way. You get to choose the [...]

Help young people to stop smoking

I was listening to Radio Norfolk yesterday about an initiative to help young people to stop smoking. Young people are not interested in the risks of smoking unfortunately because we probably all have felt invincible at times. It's only when we get older we start to worry about the effects of any damaging things we have done to ourselves. What concerned me most though was there seemed to be conflicting advice about what GPs are telling patients. Some said if pregnant women felt anxious about stopping smoking they should continue. This advice seemed to be ridiculous. What doctor in their [...]

Challenging therapy

If you are the sort of person who would prefer to be challenged on your thought processes, particularly if they are not helpful, then I may be the right therapist for you. Many people have behaviours they don’t like, but they feel stuck and don’t know how to change them. With 16 years experience helping people to change the way they think, feel and behave, I am confident to know I can help you as I have helped hundreds in the past. I also train other therapists and supervise them in all the techniques that are vital to help the [...]

Feeling depressed by Black Friday?

First of all we have adopted Halloween from America and now Black Friday. What an awful name and how comes it seems to last for at least a week? As if we don't get enough sales throughout the year. If you're feeling depressed by Black Friday, or by the thought of Christmas, or just because of the weather, then I can help. A session or two of hypnotherapy can help to change those feelings for good. And just as an incentive to take action now I will offer you 10% off my usual fee if you contact me to make [...]

What is your definition of happiness?

I saw a fantastic sunset from my garden the other evening. I felt happy. What is your definition of happiness? I was speaking on Radio Norfolk this morning about being happy, particularly with young people who worry so much about themselves. They compare themselves with others a lot of the time and it causes anxiety and unhappiness. Of course the media is responsible for a lot of this. Only this morning I read that if you are a woman, you should have a flat stomach and abs. These poor souls who strive to maintain this are liable to become even [...]

Reduce the stress, lose the weight

If you are stressed and worried, then losing weight can be difficult. For some, stress stops them eating and reduces appetite. For others though, stress makes them eat more, either bingeing or eating at inappropriate times, and eating when real hunger is not present. Hypnotherapy genuinely removes stress, and working through what causes stress. This helps to resolve past issues and allows your mind and body to work together naturally. You really can reduce the stress, lose the weight. This is what a recent client had to say: "I kept wondering why I could not lose weight no matter what [...]

E-cigarettes lead to chronic lung conditions

Just in case you think that electronic cigarettes are better for you than tobacco, there is now evidence that e-cigarettes lead to chronic lung conditions and also affecting the cells in the body. See this article I have seen quite a few clients who have begun to have panic attacks and general anxiety. It would appear that the anxiety began when smoking electronic cigarettes. Perhaps it would be better to stop all forms of smoking, whether it is habitual or psychological. If you'd like to stop smoking now, call me on 01603 712704 or visit my website www.joygower.co.uk

Fears over public speaking

"My speech went as planned and no problems at all. Afterwards a number of people came up to say how they liked my speech. I very much appreciate your time and patience." Sometimes, fears of giving a speech or presentation can fill people with dread and foreboding. It becomes a 'what if' scenario, thinking of things that can go wrong. Making pictures in our mind of us forgetting what to say. and the audience looking embarrassed and uncomfortable. It doesn't have to be this way, as the methods good hypnotherapists and NLP practitioners will tell you. I not only use [...]
