My name is Joy Gower and I am a Hypnotherapist, Master NLP Practitioner, Coach and Trainer.Joy Gower photo, small, hypnotherapy norwich

My practice is in Queens Road, Norwich, covering the whole of East Anglia (Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex). We also have clients who travel to us from elsewhere in the UK.

I also run courses in Hypnotherapy, NLP and Coaching. We have recently run courses in London and Spain, and are happy to quote for in-house courses in the UK or overseas. See our Training page for details.

I am experienced at treating conditions such as anxiety, stress, lack of confidence, smoking, weight control and other issues that affect our lives. I am also qualified to help people suffering from tinnitus, IBS and many other symptoms that cannot be effectively treated by traditional medicines.

I am also a Certified Hypnotension Practitioner. Hypnotension (TM) is a new technique that helps to reduce hypertension more naturally. It is useful for people who have raised blood pressure but have not yet resorted to medication, or for those people who are on medication but the blood pressure remains too high.

I use a combination of hypnosis, NLP and other techniques, such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), when treating clients.

Hypnosis is often referred to as a quicker therapy compared to other longer term therapies. Most people do not want to spend too long in therapy as they have busy lives and want to see quicker results. Most people feel different even after one session of hypnosis and by the time they have experienced three or four sessions they are making big differences in their lives.

Weekly sessions are preferred as the unconscious makes changes more gradually, and so even intensive sessions need to be followed up at a later date. Constant changes are usually felt over a period of time, so unless you are travelling from afar, weekly sessions make the most differences.

Weight control

 You may have been reading for many years that the only real successful way to get rid of unwanted pounds is to change your lifestyle. It may be that you don’t really want to read that, and instead want a quick fix. Even real gastric bands are not really the quick fix forever, unless of course you want the band to stay on forever and have to eat very small amounts and restrict severely what you do eat.

Most people’s eating problems lie in the fact that it is a psychological problem. If you eat because you are bored, need comfort, or want to punish yourself, then it is a compulsion.

I have been specialising in weight control since 1989, and have helped hundreds of people to re-programme their minds. Many people have reported that they no longer think about being on a 'diet' but are just making healthier choices in what they eat, so never feel deprived.

Hypnosis and other powerful techniques can help you change your attitude, and also help to increase your confidence even more. We often have beliefs about food which can be negative, and sometimes use food to comfort us even when we are not hungry.

My programme will help to eliminate negative beliefs and allow you to understand your eating patterns. We all like to be in control of what we do in both mind and body - I can show you how.

Eating disorders

Eating disorders can cover many problems people have with food. From overeating, binge eating, bulimia (making yourself sick) to anorexia.

Behind any compulsive behaviour lies anxiety and fear. You may be aware of what makes you anxious and certainly the ongoing problem will make you anxious or perhaps it is past experiences that have caused you to lose confidence within yourself and in turn the behaviour you do continues, so you end up with Catch 22.

The first part of recovery is to help you to overcome the anxieties and to feel more confident that you can overcome the problem. The second part is to create a new future for you without the problem. Some eating disorders require longer term therapy, but after talking to your therapist, you have an idea of what you can look forward to.

Addictions and Compulsions

There are many forms of addictions, and the more obvious ones are smoking, alcohol, drugs, and addictions to certain foods.

There is a new form of addiction that appears to be spreading fast and that is internet pornography. Many people are becoming addicted to it and it causes just as much heartache within families as any other kinds of addictions. Young women are reporting that men treat them badly and expect them to behave in the same way as the women they see on the internet porn sites.

The truth is, that all addictions are just illusions of the mind, in that it is not real and how the person really wants to behave.

Alcohol shuts out unwanted thoughts for a while, as does drugs and overeating or binge eating, but it is short lived and an illusion.

The person who has any kind of addiction, or compulsion that is not wanted has an anxiety within them, and is not feeling at peace or in balance. No one truly in their right mind would harm themselves deliberately or have any kind of death wise through smoking or taking drugs, and yet they seem to be unable to do anything about it.

Hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming helps to change the distortions in the mind and creates a new way of thinking. Look at it as if you have some faulty programming going on in your mind and that it needs to be re-programmed.

All my therapy is based on how you would like to think, feel and behave. It is important that you know how you would like to be in your future, so that I can personalise your therapy to exactly what you want.

These are the kind of addictions I can help with: Smoking, alcohol, drugs, gambling, Internet porn, self-harming, compulsive shopping, OCD.

Smoking

It is recognised even more now that people who smoke need support when they decide to stop smoking. Addiction to tobacco is a strong addiction and the brain needs to learn a new way of being. Hypnosis and NLP helps to overcome the old beliefs like, ‘I need to smoke to relax, or when I am bored’. Yes it is a habit but one you may have been relying on for too long now, and want to gain control back in your life. I give support for up to a year, so ex smokers can feel confident that if for any reason they return to the habit, they can come back to see me without charge.

This is what smokers often say after the therapy:

"It was as if I had never smoked before"
"I wanted to go home and wash my clothes and my car because it stank of fags"
"I did struggle to stop thinking about cigarettes, and was really glad to come for my second session"
"I thought about a cigarette around the time I would usually smoke, but then did some deep breathing and the thought disappeared"
"I was happy to know that even after the second session I could return if it was necessary. It is reassuring to know I was being looked after"
 "It has been nearly eight years since I stopped smoking, and just occasionally I remember I used to smoke, but not for long!"


If you are really fed up with the smell of tobacco and what it is doing to your lungs and heart, then it is time to stop now and really start to look after your body even better than before, then hypnosis is for you.

Sometimes people feel really depressed and the thought of stopping smoking makes them feel worse. If that is the case, then longer term therapy where you can stop gradually is the better option for you.

Therapy Room available

My practice room in Queen's Road, Norwich is available for therapists who have trained with me and who are undergoing supervision from an accredited supervisor. It is available on most Thursdays and Fridays from 9am - 5pm. Evenings by arrangement.

This practice room is particularly suitable for those therapists who wish to book on an adhoc basis and without ongoing commitment.
